HOW TO PRIORITIZE HEALTH + CHANGE YOUR LIFE

If you’re stuck in patterns that don’t match the person you want to become, especially when it comes to your health, it can feel uncomfortable. I know because I was that person.

At one point in my life, my BMI was in the obese category and I only had one pair of black sweatpants that fit me. Everything else in my closet became too small because of my poor eating habits.

What you learn from going through this journey is that your life changes when your thinking does. And that includes how you prioritize and think about food, discipline, and your own potential.

Before I lost over 70 pounds, I had to face some hard truths. I wasn’t just carrying physical weight, I was carrying emotional weight. I had patterns, stories, and beliefs that were keeping me stuck in a loop. I didn’t think I could actually change until I did.

I write about losing weight because this was my journey for so long.

If you are in the same boat I was, here are four tools that I found to be the most helpful in changing my own life and becoming the healthiest version of myself up until this point:

1. I Had to Rewire My Mindset Around Food and Discipline

Food had always been emotional and something I turned to when I was on all ends of the emotional spectrum, from stressed or sad to happy and excited. But the truth is, food isn’t the problem. It’s how we use it.

When I started eating better, I began asking better questions:

  • Am I actually hungry right now, or am I avoiding something?

  • What is this craving trying to cover up?

  • What would the best, future version of myself choose in this moment?

I learned that discipline wasn’t about being perfect. It was about building trust with myself. Discipline is a muscle, one that gets stronger the more you use it.

And as that muscle grew, so did my confidence.

2. I Hired a Health Coach

Once I decided I wanted to change, I knew I needed help. I hired a trainer who gave me structure, a plan, and accountability by building healthy eating and exercise programs because at this point in my life, willpower alone wasn’t going to cut it.

That one decision helped me stop guessing and start progressing. Having someone in your corner who sees your potential, even when you don’t, is a game-changer.

If you are worried about spending the money, you need to ask yourself what your health is worth to you while also looking at how you spend your money. If you’re spending $250 a month on going out to eat, use that money towards hiring someone that can help you. The most successful people hire out people who can help them in any area of life.

3. I Committed to Strength Training

I used to think hours of cardio were the only way, which would lead to me going from zero to one hundred trying to become a runner or professional Peloton cycler and then giving up a few weeks later. But lifting weights changed everything, not just my body, but my mind.

It taught me:

  • How to show up when it’s hard

  • How to push through resistance

  • To be confident in the gym - it’s not as scary as it looks!

The physical changes were great, but the mental strength was the real reward.

4. I Changed My Environment to Match My Goals

You can want change all day long, but if your environment is full of things pulling you backwards, it’s going to be tough to move forward.

I had to limit time with people who weren’t aligned with my goals, shift how I spent my weekends, and create new habits that supported who I wanted to become. I also had to learn how to eat healthy foods before doing certain activities or seeing certain people that I knew would make me want to snack or backtrack on my eating plan.

The truth is that you can’t build a new life in your old patterns.

5. I Stayed Patient and Focused on Becoming Unrecognizable

Transformation doesn’t happen overnight, but if you stay focused on who you want to become and not just what you want to lose, you’ll look up one day and not recognize the person in the mirror (in the best way).

You’ll think differently, you’ll carry yourself differently, and you’ll believe in yourself differently.

You don’t need a perfect plan. You need a real decision.

If you’re ready to change your life, here’s where to start:

  • Decide what you want

  • Get support (hire a coach, join a program, find a community)

  • Create habits that match your vision

  • Be willing to outgrow your old self

  • Don’t give up when it gets uncomfortable, because that’s the moment you grow

This isn’t just about weight loss, it’s about stepping into the version of you that has been waiting to be discovered. I’m proud of you!
