THE VALUE OF TIME

Have you ever heard a phrase that just stuck with you? Years ago, someone I was very close to taught me this lesson and I have never forgotten it:

“Time is the one resource you can never get back.”

This week’s RE/SET is simple - our time, whether you view it this way or not, is extremely valuable. When you give your time and access away to people or things, you are giving away the most precious resource you have.

There is a time for everything: Time to work and build your life, time to invest in relationships, time to rest. Different seasons of life require different things from us, so being able to constantly analyze where and who you are spending your time with is a must to be in alignment with who you were created to be.

In one of my favorite books, the author talks about the “relationship bullseye” - each ring represents a group of individuals that you encounter. The outermost ring represents strangers or those who you interact with on a random basis, and the closer to the bullseye you get, the more these people represent your strongest associations. The center of the circle represents that very small, tight-knit circle of those you trust with your absolute life. That bullseye is a representation of the ways we can start thinking of what and who we should give our time to.

Make a mental list and decide today the levels of access that you give to certain things in your life. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself:

  • How am I spending my time? What results is that giving me, good or bad? How do those things make me feel?

  • Who am I spending my time with? Are they a good influence on me and am I a good influence on them? How do they make me feel?

  • What or who should get more access to my life? What or who should get less access to my life?

This is always a work in progress - we only get one life and we have to spend it the best way we can!
