THE POWER OF OWNERSHIP
Exactly one year ago from today, on July 22nd, 2023, I was cleaning up the paint supplies and wiping the counters down one last time before my renters moved in on my very first home and rental property. It was one of the most mentally difficult and most lonely times of my life.
Between moving and prepping a future rental I never wanted to move out of in the first place, I felt the weight of responsibility and ownership like I have never felt before. I was questioning everything.
My rational brain knew I was delaying gratification and pushing myself a little closer towards my future goals, but as I was packing up those last supplies in my Volkswagen, I wished for one millisecond that I could just be ok with living an average, easy life where I never had to move, never had to spend thousands on prepping a rental, and never had to worry about if my renters would ruin a home I loved so much and worked hard for. But, I knew I could never be ok with that. My calling wasn’t to live a life of average, but to live a life of heavy responsibility and to take ownership over what I really wanted even if it meant doing it when everything in me didn’t want to.
Because I knew this milestone was coming up, I have been thinking a lot about the power of ownership. Here are my thoughts on ownership based off of my own mistakes, wins, and calls to friends sobbing (sorry, Melanie!):
Taking ownership means taking responsibility, and when we embrace responsibility, we are taking authority and leadership over the areas and things of our life that we can control.
Confidence and a growth in capacity takes place when you take ownership over what you currently have, which leads to bigger and better ownership opportunities over time.
When we steward and take great care of what we are given, we will be blessed with even more.
“Whoever can be trusted with little can be trusted with a lot.”
What areas of your life are you committed to taking ownership over? Would love to hear yours!
