FINDING YOUR MENTAL SCOTOMA

sco·to·ma, noun: an area of partial or complete vision loss within the visual field.

A scotoma is a blind spot where the eye cannot perceive light or images and can impact depth perception.

How many of us can say that we live life with a mental scotoma, a depth perception and blind spot issue? I know I can. In fact, a few weeks ago, I was thinking about this very subject in my own life - how every part of my past that was the hardest for me to overcome mentally were the very things that I had either:

  • Accepted knowing that I would “figure it out later”.

  • Not addressed because I didn’t realize it would be as big of a problem as it actually was.

Both accepting and not addressing are mental scotomas. This can include unhealthy eating or exercise habits, spending time on things or people that didn’t serve you, pushing things under the rug, and much more.

While our mental scotomas, our blind spots, may never go away (because we are all human), the best thing we can do for ourselves in order to elevate to each next level is to look at our negative patterns and ask:

  • What part of myself is attracting or this accepting this?

  • What part of me is ignoring this?

  • What part of me doesn’t want to change or is choosing this?

Asking these questions won’t automatically solve the problem, but acknowledging our own blind spots helps begin the process of elimination and elevation.

We’re doing this together! I’m proud of you!
